What is the highest mountain peak in the world?
Mount Everest, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas, straddles the border between Nepal and China. At 8,848 metres (or 29,029 feet), it is the highest mountain peak in the world.
The mountain is named after Sir George Everest, the British surveyor-general of India from 1830 to 1843. An Irish mountaineer, Sir Charles Howard-Bury, named the mountain peak 'Everest' in 1856 while attempting the first recorded ascent of Peak XV. In 1865, Peak XV was confirmed as the highest mountain in the world by the Great Trigonometric Survey of British India.
The Tibetan name Chomolungma does not have an exact translation. Loosely translated, it means 'Queen mother of the universe'. It is also known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and Qomolangma in Chinese.
